Tourism is one of Ireland’s key economic sectors, accounting for close to 1 in 10 of all jobs in the economy and a critically important indigenous employer with 46,0001,2 tourism related enterprises. CSO data shows foreign earnings of over €6bn from tourism in 2024 and it is estimated that overseas visitors account for three quarters of the total tourism spend in the economy.
The PfG Securing Ireland’s Future includes a commitment to “develop a new national tourism policy to 2030 setting out a vision to grow visitor and employment numbers in the sector across Ireland”.
Following the transfer of functions to the Minister and Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, the Minister has engaged in a wide-ranging consultation with stakeholders and the tourism development and promotion agencies to prepare this National Tourism Policy Statement – A New Era for Irish Tourism.
This new policy statement articulates the Government’s vision for a strong, resilient, and growing tourism sector that benefits to communities across the country. It sets out a clear ambition to enhance tourism’s economic contribution, support balanced regional development, and ensure the industry remains inclusive, sustainable, and adaptable to future challenges.
The policy statement also reflects the positioning of tourism within the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, reinforcing its role as a key driver of economic growth, job creation, and balanced regional development. The policy statement:
