The tourism value chain has transformed over the last thirty years on both the supply and demand sides through rapid digitalization. COVID-19 has accelerated change in the tourism sector, with reduction in demand sparking an acceleration of digital adoption and innovation in the industry.
We have seen the emergence of virtual and hybrid products and experiences, new business models built on digital platforms, and a host of digital solutions to COVID-19 related challenges ranging from digital health passports to emerging technologies such as machine learning and AI. To help navigate this rapidly evolving space, the World Bank’s Trade Investment and Competitiveness (TIC) Global Tourism Team conducted a mapping of digital technology along the tourism value chain to identify how governments, destinations and businesses can leverage technology for quicker recovery, more inclusive destinations, and increased productivity.
In the webinar, the Digital Tourism Think Tank (DTTT) and World Bank will present findings from the research including digital trends in supply and demand, destination level implications, and digital for sustainability, using examples to demonstrate how destinations around the world are leveraging digital for tourism success.
