Smålands Turism: Embracing disruption to lead the way towards a digital future

How can destinations better prepare themselves for disruption and leverage the upcoming trends in the tourism industry?

How can destinations better prepare themselves for disruption and leverage the upcoming trends in the tourism industry? How can destinations embrace disruption and shape the future of tourism?

Let's learn from the approach taken by Smålands Turism. Disruption is an inevitable part of the tourism sector and Smålands Turism decided to embrace it and lead the way to digitalisation in tourism.

As leaders in tourism digitalisation and trends, DTTT prepared a holistic framework on digitalisation for Smålands Turism, covering a multi-stream digitalisation programme, which reset the traditional functioning and embraced the new way of thinking while exploring opportunities of growth.

The process was based on five pillars of disruptive thinking, starting from:

  • Measurement and benchmarking of current progress
  • Development of skills and capacity
  • Collaboration driven by focused outcomes
  • Data to benefit from investment in digital growth
  • Innovation to address the specific needs of the sector

The first phase included a deep dive into a decade of digitalisation in tourism and hospitality and considered the major developments and disruptive elements that have taken place globally. Then, we took a closer look to analyse how these trends have been shaping Småland’s Turism and hospitality sector today. For this process, we conducted a Digital Maturity Assessment to analyse the readiness of the destination to adopt digital trends and examined the recent developments to anticipate disruption in tourism.

As a part of the next phase, we led two workshops to explore an industry-wide look at the future. Through a co-design process with Småland’s Turism, we identified the driving factors that will be shaping the future of tourism. We explored the key developments, expected impact and the readiness of the industry to adapt, embrace and transform with the evolution and flow of digital.

Following the process, we explored the areas of data partnerships and collaboration to predict the trends and areas of digital growth. The final stage explored the innovative solutions, connect touch-points and develop meaningful visitor experiences.

The final project concluded with a set of four valuable outcomes. First, an extensive report sharing the digital evolution of the tourism sector over the past ten years. Second, it presented a whitepaper and an Executive Report sharing a strategy suggestions and recommendations to accelerate digital growth for Smålands Turism. The third report also shares the impact of future trends and developments. Finally, a strategic report with an exploratory look at where disruption is likely to come from and how to be better prepared.
