In this session, Tim Betzin, Founder and CEO of Rausgegangen, joined to discuss the rausgegangen.de platform, a website for people to find events and activities.

Tim reflected on their journey, growing from Facebook to becoming a leading platform for cultural activities. They have become a hub, featuring and selling all types of events and gatherings. Tim explained that they started with featuring curated content but soon realised that not everyone has the same taste, especially for music and social gatherings. They noticed that the content must be relevant to their audience. He added that there are two groups that platforms must have in mind when gathering content: the visitorsand the creators, and event organisers.

Tim explained that rausgegangen.de is a digital magazine. It is an intelligent system where users can see occurring events across Cologne and see which is available and which is sold out. Therefore, the platform combines marketing, connectivity, promotion and selling points. It functions as a connector and distributor sitting between creators, event organisers, and the audience. He added that creating a sense of trust is key to success and selling tickets. At Rausgegangen, they once tried the secret concert idea where people would buy tickets, not knowing where it would be and who would perform.

Let's discuss how the pandemic has accelerated or disrupted the cultural scene? How did you respond to the pandemic?

Tim explained that Rausgegangen.de generate revenue through ticket sales. As the pandemic started, not only they were not selling tickets, but they also had to cancel tickets sold for the future. With the pandemic, they had to twist their strategy and decided to bring culture to people's living rooms. For the first time, they started streaming, a task they managed to do in 48 hours!

What was behind creating the streaming platform?

Tim explained that they already had the foundation, such as the platform and the ticketing system, in place, so they just started streaming on Vimeo. They began a streaming tip project and were amazed that around 10% of people watching the online streams also tipped. The initiative generated thousands of euros and became the motivation for them to continue.

We are post-pandemic, with still a lot of uncertainty about events and travelling. How do you see the future of the outdoor cultural scene?

Tim replied that they had become the number one streaming platform, especially for theatres which have been a great success and resulted in many valuable connections. However, they understand that streaming-only works best when we are in complete lockdown, and there is no other way to enjoy the events. Tim added that an entrepreneurial mindset is required to overcome challenges.

How do organisations use this to be more competitive?

Tim commented that online ticketing has become more significant. It is important to have digital solutions that are fitted to the context.
