How are Key Players Pivoting their Strategies to Navigate Through Times of Disruption?

How key players are pivoting their strategies to navigate through times of disruption?

The travel industry has witnessed a strong recovery post-Covid, where travellers have shown they are eager to book holidays and travel after two long years of border restrictions, Covid testing requirements and lockdowns.

However, the post-pandemic scenario has also introduced the travel industry to a new set of challenges such as inflation, rising fuel costs, staff shortages and global turmoil. This means that uncertainty still prevails.

Post-pandemic "Shifting Markets" at X. Festival 2022 - The Leaders Summit, taking place from 29th November to 1st December, explores the impact of trends and challenges from the pandemic and how key players are pivoting their strategies to navigate through times of disruption.

We will explore crucial questions, such as how the pandemic has shifted the needs of the hospitality workforce with a growing need for soft skills over hard skills and how polling data helps destinations thrive by pinpointing opportunities in a more challenging market.

From Consumer Insights to Effective Marketing

Many DMOs struggle to find the formula to run effective marketing campaigns and to get the best results without spending the entire budget.

One thing is certain: data is part of the answer. Eva Stewart, YouGov, will be sharing how destinations can use polling data to identify, hone in on motivations and attract the right visitors.

In this opening talk from YouGov, we'll be looking at how the UK market is changing in the face of multiple economic challenges and where opportunity lies for destinations seeking to ensure the brand positions itself in the right channels with the right messaging based on current data and insights.

Training Hospitality Staff in a Post-Pandemic Context

The pandemic has shifted the needs and expectations of the hospitality workforce, with a growing need for soft skills over hard skills to allow them to become more adaptable to change and respond to the ever-growing needs presented by the digital environment.

Leadership, communication and empathy have proven to be hugely important for teams today, over traditional training methods, which focus on the development of specific skills required for specific job profiles.

This calls for increased attention towards training resources and helping those in the industry to develop their capabilities, to find the motivation to stay within the industry.

The Head of L&D at INSETE, Magda Peistikou, will dive into how they organise seminars and conferences and establish strategic partnerships, aimed at empowering and developing skills, abilities and culture of the people in the tourism sector in order to "connect tourism with its people" and build a more resilient sector.

Voice Marketing in a First-Party Data World

This session will allow us to reflect on how collecting first-party data from consumers through voice marketing can result in excellent ROI through the experience of Contiki and ProColombia, allowing users to know what to pack in such a diverse country.

Lottie Norman, Content Marketing Director at Contiki, will present the thinking behind their "Pack My Bags" Alexa skill, which helps travellers pack by only telling Alexa the destination they're heading to, helping them to know exactly which clothing and items they’ll need.

This project is aligned with the increasing use of voice assistant devices. People tend to use them to search for answers, to get updates or to order items. For example, as of 2021, nearly one in three (32%) US consumers had a smart speaker (Statista, 2021) - an eight percentage point increase from 2020, which highlights the potential of these devices.
