PROGRAMME

Key Information

The programme is an online course made up of 5 modules, that run from January to June 2022. Every module is made up of 2 live sessions and on-demand material.

1. Introduction to the Programme

The first module will be dedicated to identifying the main factors that play a role in the sustainable development of a destination.

Major emphasis will be given to the perspective of sustainability as a process rather than a goal highlighting the urge of moving away from sustainability as an ideal final state and bringing attention to the ongoing transformation and iteration of practices.

2. Understanding Sustainability

The second module is dedicated to understanding the different aspects of sustainability, what are the most commonly accepted guidelines and who is standing out as a leader overall.

The focus will then shift to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and how these can be translated and applied to the tourism industry.

3. Leveraging Data & Measuring Impact

In this module, we will analyse available data in order to set the targets for future actions. Using co-creative techniques we will look at public, private and user data to understand what data is accessible and what data we need.

The discussion will be framed around key targets and indicators of the SDGs, which will help break down the top-level goals and apply them to wealthy destinations.

4. Sustainability & Effective Communication

Once priority has been established, we can explore how to communicate and convey the right message to the general public, local community, visitors, industry and government and policy makers.

We will explore the role of involving the users directly in the promotion and encouraging them to take action, ask to be heard and lead change from bottom to top.

5. Co-designing Strategies for a Sustainable Future

The last module will look at the future of the destination strategies, reiterating the importance of considering sustainability as part of the overall strategy rather than the final goal to achieve.

After having discussed and looked into challenges and barriers, participants will be invited to co-design together, defining short-, mid- and long-term goals that will help measure their progress.

FAQ

The Sustainable Destinations programme brings together destination professionals to become sustainability leaders and ambassadors within their organisations. As the Digital Tourism Think Tank we bring a unique expertise of working exclusively with global destinations.

Unlike other existing programmes, our sessions are adapted to fit participant's needs and challenges. This is not a programme for those simply looking at the basics of sustainability, it's built for people who are ready to take action. Through interactive co-design sessions, we will brainstorm together on what steps you can take right now to begin your sustainability journey across your organisation.

Furthermore, the on-demand material will give you an understanding of what sustainability initiatives exist, how to assess these and what that might mean for your own projects.

The Sustainability Leadership Programme consists of five modules covering an introduction to sustainability and key UN SDGs (Sustainability Development Goals) targets through to how to effectively assess and communicate sustainability initiatives:

1. Introduction to the Programme
2. Understanding Sustainability
3. Leveraging Data & Measuring Impact
4. Sustainability & Effective Communication
5. Co-designing Strategies for a Sustainable Future

Each module will run for approximately four weeks.
During these four weeks, there will be two live sessions where participants will meet with programme leaders for interactive discussions and on-demand material will be shared throughout.

Every participant organisation is required to sign-up 2 to 3 people so that they may bring different perspectives and share the workload between them.

The aim of the Sustainability Leadership Programme is to empower teams to become sustainability advocates and leaders within their organisation and industry. By developing a critical mindset when it comes to what sustainability looks like and how to incorporate it into a DMO's day-to-day tasks, participants will be able to push for better change and bring best practices and case studies to help inspire their teams.

There are 2 live sessions per module, which will be run online. Participants will get calendar invitations and links to join prior to the sessions.
All of the programme's content will be made available via the DTTT Community platform, participants will be invited to join prior to the start and have access to the content .
